課程概述

This course is to give students the basic understanding of materials science and engineering. The interplay of structure, properties/performance, and processing of the solid materials will be focused. We will start from the atomic bonding and the structure of crystalline solids first. The defects, diffusion, phase diagrams, and phase transformation, which are general to all materials, will then be discussed. The introduction of metals, ceramic, polymer, and composite materials will also be given. At the end, the properties of the materials, which are important to engineering applications, will be discussed.  

課程目標
This purposes of this course are three folds. The first is to give students the basic understanding of the materials science and engineering, especially on the interplay of the structure, properties/performance, and processing of the solid materials. The second is to give a general introduction of common engineering materials, such as metals, ceramics, polymers, and composites. The third is to give students some guidelines for materials selection and design.  
課程要求
The calculus, chemistry, and physics are the basic courses needed for this course.
